Our Conscious Choices

Nanajon’s products are the reflection of conscious choices guided by an upfront and honest path towards sustainability. At times, our products may involve compromises, particularly when it’s challenging to ensure both social and ecological sustainability aspects simultaneously.

Materials

Our initial intention was to use organic cotton to manufacture our products and meet our sustainability ambitions. Deeper research on the subject and discussions with our manufacturer made us realise the abuses around ecolabels in the textile industry, the lack of traceability regarding working conditions and the complexity of making sustainable choices.

Nanajon’s cushions are made with non-organic cotton grown in the U.S., which responds to high-quality standards and ensures decent working conditions for the workers. We are happy to share further details upon request.

Printing

We use digital printing technology to create our designs on fabric. With this method, we can efficiently print a series of designs on the same fabric, tailoring the length to match each product batch precisely. This minimises waste in our production process.

Environmental impact assessments show that digital textile printing is more sustainable than other printing techniques, but there is still along way to go.

We have also revised and adjusted the products dimensions with our manufacturer to optimise how much fabric is used across the cloth’ width and reduce waste.

Manufacturing

We are manufacturing all of our products in the UK, near Manchester. We have partnered with a family-run business counting around 30 employees to craft Nanajon’s home linens. We are proud to support a local business and contribute to preserving an industry that once shaped the North of England and the UK.

We decided to produce our home linens on a made-to-order basis, as it was most suited to our needs and constraints of being a small business. Stock and waste management are important issues in the retail sector, and we wanted to avoid creating ourselves additional waste with potentially unwanted stock.

Labelling

Our brand labels are woven in the UK using recycled PET (plastic bottles). At this stage, we have limited information concerning the yarn’s country of origin or actual carbon footprint impact. This is something we aim to address in the future, and that is part of our Sustainability Roadmap.

Our products are equipped with swing tags that are printed in the UK on FSC certified recycled paper. We are happy to share our supplier’s credentials and sustainability commitments upon request. Each swing tag has a sticky label applied on it, indicating products dimensions and specifications. At this stage, our supplier is unable to provide FSC certified self-adhesive paper. We aim to find more sustainable alternatives in the future as part of our Sustainability Roadmap.

Packaging

We have been working to remove all plastic from our packaging and use the best options to preserve products’ quality while reducing waste.

Our kitchen and dining linen are packaged in Tencel™ ribbon which uses wood fibres, certified as compostable and biodegradable. Click on the following links to learn more about Tencel™ sustainable properties and products’ traceability. We have privileged this option over belly-bands as the ribbon can be reused by our customers once purchased.

Our products are packed in biodegradable and compostable packing bags before being placed in shipping parcels. We are happy to share our supplier’s credentials and sustainability commitments upon request.

Nanajon's Sustainability Roadmap

We are committed to:

• Sourcing alternative fabrics to replace the cotton in our products

• Using fabric printing inks that do not harm the environment

• Finding upcycling solutions and reuse our fabric waste

• Proposing packaging that is fully compostable and biodegradable

• Developing further partnerships with like-minded suppliers to help us understand the full origin of materials and their carbon footprint

• Undertaking a carbon footprint assessment to develop further goals and achieve more sustainable business practices
